The Happiest Companies To Work For In 2016

This article is more than 8 years old.

Your ready-made New Year’s resolution: Be happier at work.

To determine the happiest companies to work for each year, fulfillment-focused job search site CareerBliss reviews eight factors that impact professional happiness, including work-life balance, an employee’s relationship with his or her boss and co-workers, office environment, job resources, compensation, opportunities for professional development, and company culture. How much emphasis employees place on each factor is taken into consideration as well.

This year’s list of the 50 Happiest Companies In America for 2016 is based on thousands of independent company reviews by employees, reported to CareerBliss between 2014 and 2015. The company cites "career development support, a positive relationship with managers and a strong company culture" as consistent themes in the employee reviews of companies appearing on this year's list.

“The CareerBliss Happiest Companies in America reveals insight into what continues to motivate and inspire people to find happiness at work," said CareerBliss CEO Heidi Golledge. "We believe that every employer and employee have the ability to find and create work environments that foster happiness and success."

Topping the list this year is UnitedHealthcare. The Minnesota-based health insurance provider is the largest health carrier in the U.S. and boasts an average employee salary of $67,856, according to CareerBliss, where the company currently has more than 4,500 jobs listed.

Next up is Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen. The biopharma company offers an even higher average salary than UnitedHealthcare--$74,808. Novartis International rounds out the top three with 279 job listings on CareerBliss and a hefty average salary of $183,182.

“This year we noted that employees once again stated that compensation is important," said Golledge, "but far beyond a paycheck, is the relationship they have with their coworkers and manager that defines a happy workplace for them. This goes to show that in many cases happiness cannot be bought.”
